En la Leonera. El encierro policial de menores en Buenos Aires, 1890-1920

Resumen
El presente trabajo tiene por objeto reconstruir las condiciones de privación de la libertad de los menores de edad a manos de la Policía de la Capital hacia fines del siglo XIX y primeras décadas del siglo XX en la ciudad de Buenos Aires; así como comprender cómo y por qué la existencia de un abultado grupo de niños y jóvenes de las clases trabajadoras porteñas estuvo marcada por la experiencia de la reclusión en los establecimientos dependientes de la policía. Además de dar cuenta de las características específicas que asumía la vida de los menores en estos establecimientos; interesa aquí dar cuenta de los motivos por los que pasaban sus días allí niños que habían cometido delitos y faltas menores, como también niños huérfanos y abandonados. La hipótesis que estructura este trabajo parte de la estrecha vinculación que existía entre el funcionamiento de la justicia de menores –en un momento en el que no existía un fuero judicial específico- y el lugar de la policía dentro del entramado burocrático-administrativo de atención de la infancia “abandonada y delincuente” de la época.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the experience a group of minors went through when they were deprived of their freedom by the Capital police by the end of 19th century and early decades of the 20th century. This paper also aims at understanding how and why the life of a large group of working class minors and young people was shaped by the imprisonment experience in the police premises. Apart from listing the specific features which characterized the life of these minors in these premises, this work aims at mentioning the reasons why children who have committed minor crimes and offenses spent their days there, as well as orphans and abandoned children. The hypothesis which frames this work stems from the close connection between the way the justice of minors functioned–when there was no specific legal jurisdiction– and the role the police played in the bureaucratic-administrative assistance network for the “abandoned and criminal” children of that period.
